With so much to see and do on the Strip, some people visit Las Vegas and never leave the big hotels and casinos there. However, there are some merits to taking the brief trip downtown to see the sights as well. For starters, if you are on a budget there are good deals to be had downtown. Room rates and meals tend to be cheaper than what you will get if you stay on the Strip. You will have to pay for transportation to get to the Strip for the attractions there, but overall you may end up saving money. Plus, the limits are often lower at the casinos downtown, so you can play more for your money than you can at the big casinos and get the most out of your gambling dollar. There are also plenty of things to see and do downtown as well. One attraction that you will not want to miss is the Lied Discovery Childrens Museum. This attraction is a great stop for families, as it gives children a chance to touch, seek, and explore. It also offers a great alternative to the casinos, gambling, and questionable shows that may not be appropriate for a younger audience. The Museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 AM to 5 PM year round. Cost for admission is $7 for adults, $6 for seniors age 55 and older, and $6 for military personnel and children, and children under a year of age are free. For a spectacular free show you will want to see the Fremont Street Experience. Hourly shows occur on Freemont Street from dusk to midnight year round. Over 12 million lights create a fabulous show over the old glitter gulch, and the music over the sound system is sure to get your body moving. Enjoy a cheap hot dog from one of the stands for one of the most inexpensive evenings that Las Vegas has to offer. If you stop in downtown to see the sights, you may want to stop at the Plaza for a meal. This is one of the original casinos that still offer the cheap prices that made Las Vegas food famous. Here you can get steak and lobster for under $10, a large serving of Prime Rib for under $8, or a plate of fabulous spaghetti for less than $6. While the food is probably not worth a trip for that alone, it can definitely round out your inexpensive day downtown. If you want to see a little of Old Las Vegas from the pre Strip era, you will definitely want to stop in at the Golden Nugget. Made famous on the reality TV show The Casino, it has seen $30 million dollars in renovations in the past two years. This infamous piece of Las Vegas history was the largest casino in the world in 1946 when it was built. Now it offers over 1900 guest rooms and suites, which can start as low as $60 a night ; or even less if you can catch a good deal online. If you choose to stay here, it is just a simple bus or taxi ride to the Strip to see the attractions there. So, if you have the time to leave the lights, action, shows, and gambling of the Strip, a day trip downtown is certainly worth your time. There is plenty to see and do, and with prices a lot more affordable than what you are going to find on the Strip you are going to get the most out of your entertainment dollar for the day. You may find that you like downtown so much that you schedule your next stay there.
