The Bellagio Beautiful Waterworks for Free

One of the most spectacular shows that you can see in Las Vegas for free is the fountains outside of the Bellagio Hotel and Casino. This beautiful water show should be on every Las Vegas tourists must see list.

The fountains run Monday through Friday from 3 P.M. until midnight and on Saturday and Sunday from noon until midnight. The show starts every half hour until 7 PM, at which point it runs every 15 minutes. You can view the fountains dancing year round, though they will occasionally close the display during periods of high winds.

The display features a dramatic combination of music, water, and light, which are best seen after dark. The movements of the fountains are choreographed with a variety of songs, including One, Singular Sensation that has been featured on Broadway and Fly Me to the Moon that was made famous by Frank Sinatra. New music is added every year, with appropriate selections made for the different holidays and seasons as well. The show spans the quarter mile long lake and generally lasts between five and ten minutes.

The fantastic display was created by WET Design. This Southern California firm is also responsible for other famous displays such at the LeapFrog Fountain at Disneys EPCOT, the Sky Rockets at Chicagos Navy Pier, and the Universal CityWalk Fountain.

The Bellagio fountain is the most expensive and ambitious project that the company has done to date, costing approximately $40 million to build. Not to mention the 1,200 nozzles, of three different types that help to make it such an amazement: oarsman, which swing back and forth to create dancing water, shooters that shoot water upwards, and super shooters that perform the highest water blasting effects. There are also 4,500 different lights that help to make it such a prominent feature in Las Vegas.

To complement the design and get the music just right, outside professionals were also brought in to assist WET Design. These included the composer/conductor from Lawrence of Arabia Gerard Schurmann and the choreographer from Dirty Dancing Kenny Ortega.

The movement of the fountains across the lake is varied, responding to the passage of the music. Some of the movement is continuous and flowing, while other water jets are rapidly pulsing, sending fountains of water as high as 240 feet into the air. With such an array of music and movement you will never see the exact same performance twice. The beauty of the fountains is so mesmerizing that they have even been made famous by appearances on the big screen, most notably in a recent remake of Oceans Eleven starring such big names as George Clooney, Brad Pitt, and Julia Roberts.

Visitors to Las Vegas often cite the fountains as a view not to be missed. With no admission, the cost is right, and the water is sure to awe viewers of all ages. The best views are supposedly from right in the middle along the Strip though you should try all angles to find a view that suits you the most. Going after dark also allows you to get the full affect of the light show. Do not forget to take your camera along as well so that you will be able to share the experience with family and friends back home.

If you feel like your trip is too hectic to stop and watch water dance, try making a reservation at OLIVES restaurant at the Bellagio and ask for patio seating. The Mediterranean fare is a little on the pricier side, but you will get the benefit of a beautiful free show while you dine. It may just change how you think about water for the next visit.
